Most people have objected to the opening sentence, he says. Angry complaints have cascaded into the paper, according to John Clare, the reporter who wrote the piece. The story, with its startling reference to the 1967 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as the white parents of a young woman who brings home her black fiance, Sydney Poitier, has created quite a stir. Here's the lead of the story: "Guess who's coming to dinner-and staying for a while?" The local newspaper, Park Cities People, features Karen Watson on the front page of its current edition. But unlike most of the other new arrivals, Watson, 36 and her husband, Joshua Lazu, 38, have attracted a fair amount of attention even before their moving truck has pulled up to the house. ![]() We focus mainly on issues concerning health, healthcare, and medical technologies, but will not discuss in detail the definition, theory, or function of consciousness, a major theme of the novel. To the best of our knowledge, no academic paper has been published in Japan or overseas that analyzes Harmony from the bioethical standpoint. Finally, to conclude, we propose appropriate attitudes toward health and healthcare and argue that a perfect healthy utopia should not be a goal. We will then analyze various ethical issues that arise in Harmony’s World. We will also present a brief history of medical progress as well as look closer into current medical technologies and healthcare services closely related to Harmony’s World. In the sections that follow, we will introduce the protagonists of the story, provide an overview of social and healthcare systems including those pertaining to mental health, and summarize the story. In this context, we believe we can gain insight into important lessons about ethical, social, and psychological issues that could arise in a healthy longevity utopia achieved by super-medicine by analyzing Harmony’s World. In addition, health-consciousness among people is becoming universal, and this has led to strong anxiety about health as well as fear of aging and death (Asai et al. With the rapid development of AI, ICT, and other relevant medical technologies in recent years, it is now much easier to imagine that the healthcare system and way of living depicted in Harmony’s World could be realized in the near future. In our view, we are edging closer to the world depicted in Harmony (hereafter, “Harmony’s World”). Present society aims for a future in which healthy longevity is achieved through advanced medicine and science, as well as technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), information communication technology (ICT), and nanotechnology. Project Itoh wrote Harmony while being hospitalized for lung cancer treatment, and passed away at the early age of 34 in March 2009. Smith, 2010, San Francisco, Haikasoru), and the English version was awarded the Philip K Dick Special Award the same year. The novel was translated into English in 2010 (by Alexander O. Harmony won the 40th Seiun (Galaxy) Award and the 30th Japan SF Award in 2009, both of which are awarded to the best SF novels in Japan. Here we pick up the masterpiece SF novel Harmony, written by Japanese writer Project Itoh in 2008, and consider the various ethical issues involving the world depicted in the novel, as well as its ending. We conclude by proposing an alternative governing principle for future healthcare, and refer to it as the “do-everything-in-moderation” principle.Ī great work of science fiction (SF) can present us vivid images of possible futures as well as bring to light serious issues, allowing us to learn valuable lessons by depicting human relations, new cultural tendencies, and novel relationships between human beings, science, and technology. But is it right to aim for a perfectly healthy society at all costs? Should we sacrifice freedom, privacy, vivid feelings, and personal dignity to achieve such a world? In our view, the answer is no, as this would require the loss of many essential values. One can argue that healthy longevity is highly preferred. This is a situation where the community exhibits extremely powerful and effective paternalism. Moreover, there is no room for self-determination concerning healthcare because medical interventions and care are completely routinized, automated, centralized, and instantly provided. Privacy no longer exists, as it is perceived ethical for citizens to openly communicate health-related information to establish one’s credibility. From a bioethical standpoint, the world in Harmony is governed by a “healthy longevity supremacy” principle, with being healthy equated to being good and right. Citizens in Harmony are required to strictly control themselves to achieve perfect health and must always disclose their health information to the public and continuously prove their health. Super-medicine is realized through highly advanced medical technologies. In the world depicted in Harmony, preserving health and life is a top priority. To consider whether or not we should aim to create a perfect healthy utopia on Earth, we focus on the SF novel Harmony (2008), written by Japanese writer Project Ito, and analyze various issues in the world established in the novel from a bioethical standpoint. ![]() ![]() But if you’re looking for a high-value whiskey, this isn’t it. If you already have an expansive collection and want to add depth, or you’re a diehard fan and have the budget, then go for it. But it’s a splurge, even at MSRP, and top-line secondary prices are just nuts. However, it should have been increasing slowly instead of all at once. The currentIts $150 price tag probably has caught up to where it should be as evidenced by market demand. It’s not an everyday whiskey, but hits the spot for a special occasion. ![]() It’s enjoyable whiskey with a nicely integrated port finish over a rye base, rich flavors, and a proof that strikes a nice balance between those that prefer higher proof whiskeys and those who prefer lower proof ones, reaching a large potential market. This is evident in the marketplace, as finding it at its asking price isn’t easy. As a result, it’s gained momentum over the years, maintaining high demand and a rabid fanbase. It shows up once a year, and some are lucky to see it at MSRP, while others may never see it at all. But A Midwinter Night’s Dram isn’t billed as an everyday pour, it’s billed as a limited release and has always been treated that way. Beam Suntory, Booker’s parent company, must have taken note, and pulled back on their plans to inject such a sudden, sharp increase, instead phasing it in more slowly over several years until they got to its current $100 price point. At the time it was a shock to the bourbon community, and considering Booker’s was a readily available everyday pour for many long time fans of it, we discussed the shocking increase in an opinion piece. The increase is reminiscent of Booker’s sharp $40 increase from $60 to $100 that was announced in 2016, and set to take effect immediately in 2017. But this increase came at once, as High West maintained its price point consistently until this year, which saw a 50% jump from Act 9 in 2021 to Act 10 in 2022. The $50 MSRP increase over eight years isn’t unreasonable per se, especially considering the rise in demand for premium whiskey. Blending multiple ryes from different distilleries combined with port finishing, and finally bottling in an eye-catching bottle and label (as quoted from the label itself, “The front label was totally plagiarized from the first quarto edition of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ printed in 1600.”), allowed the whiskey to easily command its high price tag of about $100 per bottle since its launch a decade ago. This still allows A Midwinter Night’s Dram to stand out in the American whiskey space, even if it’s less unique than it used to be.Ī Midwinter Night’s Dram received quite warm reception when it was first released, and that helped fuel the demand for the brand going forward. Despite these changes, A Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 10 remains a really good representation of rye whiskey finished in port barrels to pleasing results, building off a unique rye blend, and then finishing with a style that is less common for rye than it is for bourbon. Additionally, the base Rendezvous Rye has experienced changes over the years - the sourced Barton component was replaced with High West’s own distillate, and the overall age of the blend came down as compared to earlier releases. Because the nature of finishing is so sensitive, even a single brand may experience wide variation from batch to batch. Even then, a well-integrated flavor profile is more elusive, and varies by release. While the list of options is growing, sometimes a store may have only one option, if any at all. Milam & Greene Rye Port Wine Cask Finish, Sagamore Spirit Rye Port Finish, and WhistlePig Old World Cask Finish (a blend that includes Madeira, Sauternes, and port) are among them. Notably, these are bourbons, but less-known rye base port finished whiskeys do exist. 1792 Port Finished Bourbon, Woodinville Port Finished Bourbon, and Angel’s Envy Bourbon Port Finish are among some of the top-of-mind port finished whiskeys. In 2022, wine finishing is quite common, and using ex-port barrels is as common as any wine finishing styles. In my 2014 review of A Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 2.1, it was clear that finishing rye whiskeys in port barrels was a relatively new concept, even if it was starting to become more prevalent. The 2001 French romantic comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Jennet is a film like no other the way it is shot, the way it is acted, every aspect is unabashedly unique and incredibly refreshing. If it had not been for its all too obvious flaws, this movie would have been an enchanting, delightful diversion.Watching Amélie is an experience you’re unlikely to forget. However, the movie’s good-hearted, magical originality largely outweighs its moral shortcomings. Furthermore, Amélie’s destiny ultimately relies on mystical fate. Tautou deftly makes Amélie a thoroughly lovable and poignant character.ĪMELIE lasts too long and is significantly flawed by strong sexual immorality and nudity. These moments are as oddly moving and uplifting as they are amusing. Her quiet magic is underscored by the movie’s fantastical cinematic touches – statues come to life, pictures talk and the heroine literally, though momentarily, melts when she first comes close to Nino. She plays pranks on the local shopkeeper to avenge his abuse of a mentally slow employee. She forges a contrite love note to a widow from her long-dead, adulterous husband. She secretly delivers whimsical videotapes to her invalid neighbor. She spontaneously leads a blind man down the street and poetically describes the sights surrounding him. She eventually arrives at a crossroads: Should she take a risk at last and reveal her identity to him? Or should she maintain her safe, anonymous, yet lonely existence?Īlong the way to her climactic decision, Amélie comes into contact with various outcasts and loners whose lives she brightens with her kindly, clandestine mischief. (Regrettably, Nino happens to work as a clerk in a porn shop, but Amélie overcomes her initial disappointment in this flaw.) With a series of mysterious notes and pranks, she lures him on a sort of scavenger hunt to find her and his album. She tracks down the album’s owner, Nino, who’s played with understated simplicity by actor/writer/director Mathieu Kassovitz. The album is filled with anonymous, discarded pictures he’s collected from a Photomat machine at a Paris metro station. Longing for human intimacy, she eventually develops a crush on a man she doesn’t even know after she finds his photo album. Yet, Amélie fears the messiness of real life and seldom strays far from her lonely apartment. Amélie loves to anonymously fix others’ lives by doing secret favors or exacting playful revenge on behalf of the downtrodden. The gamine Audrey Tautou, who has been compared most often to Audrey Hepburn, plays the title character, an introverted 23-year-old waitress. Overall, you should understand that these stages are different modes which contribute to the entire design project, rather than sequential steps. So, you can return to previous stages to make further iterations, alterations and refinements – to find or rule out alternative solutions. Although this is the final phase, design thinking is iterative: Teams often use the results to redefine one or more further problems. This could involve simply paper prototyping.Įvaluators rigorously test the prototypes. Your team should produce some inexpensive, scaled-down versions of the product (or specific features found within the product) to investigate the ideas you’ve generated. The aim is to identify the best possible solution for each problem found. Stage 4: Prototype- Start to Create Solutions Brainstorming is particularly useful here. The solid background of knowledge from the first two phases means you can start to “think outside the box”, look for alternative ways to view the problem and identify innovative solutions to the problem statement you’ve created. Stage 3: Ideate- Challenge Assumptions and Create Ideas You can create personas to help keep your efforts human-centered before proceeding to ideation. These definitions are called problem statements. You then analyze your observations and synthesize them to define the core problems you and your team have identified. It’s time to accumulate the information gathered during the Empathize stage. Stage 2: Define- State Your Users' Needs and Problems Empathy is crucial to a human-centered design process such as design thinking because it allows you to set aside your own assumptions about the world and gain real insight into users and their needs. Here, you should gain an empathetic understanding of the problem you’re trying to solve, typically through user research. Stage 1: Empathize- Research Your Users' Needs © Interaction Design Foundation, CC BY-SA 3.0 Note: These stages are not always sequential, and teams often run them in parallel, out of order and repeat them in an iterative fashion.ĭesign thinking is an iterative and non-linear process that contains five phases: 1. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (aka the d.school) describes design thinking as a five-stage process. Ludwig Wilhelm Wall, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons Using it, your team can get behind hard-to-access insights and apply a collection of hands-on methods to help find innovative answers. With design thinking, teams have the freedom to generate ground-breaking solutions. With it, teams can do better UX research, prototyping and usability testing to uncover new ways to meet users’ needs.ĭesign thinking’s value as a world-improving, driving force in business (global heavyweights such as Google, Apple and Airbnb have wielded it to notable effect) matches its status as a popular subject at leading international universities. Of all design processes, design thinking is almost certainly the best for “thinking outside the box”. Design teams use design thinking to tackle ill-defined/unknown problems (aka wicked problems) because they can reframe these in human-centric ways and focus on what’s most important for users. Twenty-first-century organizations from a wide range of industries find design thinking a valuable means to problem-solve for the users of their products and services. Professionals from a variety of fields, including architecture and engineering, subsequently advanced this highly creative process to address human needs in the modern age. Simon first mentioned design thinking in his 1969 book, The Sciences of the Artificial, and then contributed many ideas to its principles. The world has become increasingly interconnected and complex since cognitive scientist and Nobel Prize laureate Herbert A. In user experience (UX) design, it’s crucial to develop and refine skills to understand and address rapid changes in users’ environments and behaviors. In his 2009 TED talk, Design Thinking pioneer Tim Brown discusses Design Thinking’s value in solving extremely complex challenges. I played with this feature but have to admit I like MailSteward better as an archival tool. If your email box is getting out of control, EagleFiler will pull and index your email. It allows you to use rich text and several other formatting options not available in the native comments. If you like to use OS X’s comment field you will love the “note” feature in EagleFiler. It also does Boolean searches which I find very helpful in my larger work databases.
